                            2011 Leadership Conference

June 27th and 28th, over twenty members of MSRC gathered in Helena, MT for the annual Leadership Conference. Between bouts of laughter and copious amounts of chocolate, the ladies discussed important issues pertaining to MSRC and local reading councils.

The Executive Board worked hard Monday morning to review and revise the by-laws and procedures set forth by MSRC and IRA. They were joined later that day by Leadership Councils from all over Montana. Sarah Womble, IRA's Council Development Manger, shared valuable information regarding IRA's beautiful website. We learned several new ways to engage in professional discussions with teachers in our area and across the country. The resources available on this website are immeasurable! Please share this tool with your colleagues and become a member of IRA!

Later that afternoon, Carole Monlux (MSRC Membership Director) gave us some valuable strategies to maintain and increase membership within our local councils. This produced some great discussions within the group. We area ll excited to increase our MSRC membership, local council membership, and even IRA membership! Help us get the word out, won't you?

That evening, we celebrated the installation of the new MSRC officers for 2011-2012. The gavel was passed, and we are excited to see the new things these talented and dedicated professionals will bring to this wonderful organization.

On Tuesday, Nancy Coopersmith and Jerrie Boksich were kind enough to present information regarding Common Core Standards. Its always important to review WHY we are assessing, WHAT we are assessing, and what we DO with those assessments. Be sure to stay informed by viewing Core Standards at OPI's website!

Additionally, we heard a Montana State Reading Conference update from Annette Young (MSRC VP), and Lynne Nevrivy and Terry Lewis (MSRC Conference Coordinators). Be sure to click on the "MT State Conference" tab under "Upcoming Events" for more information and the current brochure. This will be an amazing conference!

MSRC Leadership Board were also privy to the IRA Convention Report, which was held in Orlando, FL. The theme of the conference was "Read for the Record," and Montana was well represented at this prestigious event! The day wrapped up with a presentation by Tara Hagins regarding MSRC's technology communications including our website, facebook page, E-journal and more. There are so many ways to stay in touch in this day and age, and we are lucky to have the tools at our disposal!

All in all, the conference was well attended. The presenters were knowledgable and engaging. Once again, we were reminded of the importance of working together to make MSRC and our local councils the organizations they are meant to be!
